Wakefield, Massachusetts (UCTP Taíno News) - On Thursday, October 10th, the Wakefield Human Rights Commission presented a special program to commemorate Indigenous Peoples Day. UCTP Liaison Officer Chali’naru Dones, a member of the Guainia Taino Tribe, who was adorned with traditional-style jewelry and a headdress she created, presented a fascinating slideshow history of Taíno People since BC (Before Columbus).

As part of her presentation, she demonstrated the conch as a communication tool; the Makana, an oar-shape of implement used for multiple purposes; and the Maraka. Along with her son Tataniki, Dones shared traditional dances, and she sang a song of blessing in her Indigenous Taíno language.

The Wakefield, Massachusetts Human Rights Commission (HRC) promotes human rights and diversity in the community. The HRC aims to create educational programs and events to promote respect and understanding of diversity.
