Marchers at the head of the March to End Fossil Fuels in New York City


New York, NY (UCTP Taíno News) - Tens of thousands of activists, Indigenous Peoples, students and others took the streets of New York for the "March to End Fossil Fuels" protest on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023 in New York. The United Confederation of Taíno People (UCTP) was an official partner of the march and supported a delegation to attend.

Accompanied by Indigenous leaders from throughout the hemisphere, UCTP President, R. Múkaro Borrero lead a call to the directions and spoke at the interfaith ceremony organized to open the March.


Marchers coming from all over the country and beyond, carried signs, banners, and chanted varios slogans with many criticizing the Biden administration's continuing approval of fossil fuel projects such as the controversial Willow project in Alaska. At the end of the march, organizers held a rally that included various movement leaders and celebrity allies including Susan Sarandon, Ramapo Chief Dwaine Perry; Schaghticoke Chief R. Hawk Storm Bergin; and US Congressional representative, the Hon. Alejandra Ocasio-Cortez, among others.


At the rally Ocasio-Cortez stated “We are all here for one reason: to end fossil fuels around the planet.” The "March to End Fossil Fuels" ended close to the UN headquarters where world leaders will gather this week for a Climate-related Summit.
